The Weekly Group Zoom Calls
What if we could somehow figure out how to have a regular Zoom meeting for anyone interested in discussing that week's photos? I think it would be best NOT to assign or mention keepers or freeflights during the Zoom meeting, and maybe we could look at each photo and allow everyone, one at a time (moderator with a mute button!), to either comment or pass with perhaps a three or four-minute limit.
Even if participants never commented, they would still learn a lot.
Ideally, only the photographer of a featured photo would be present so that questions could be asked. Still, we could both do that, along with general comments about specific photographs where the photographer was not present in the meeting.
There are many ways this could be done, and it would be important that a high degree of civility should be adhered to and enforced.
We probably would need to test the waters first with just a few of us to see if it might be workable. Maybe we could start with just a friendly meeting about how we got started in photography and our goals.
One hang-up would be language and time zone differences...
I find Teddy’s idea of seriously discussing images very exciting! A direct exchange is far more interesting, as it might prevent careless or offhand comments and would likely attract only members genuinely interested in engaging with both their work and others. If you decide to implement something like this, I’m in! Practically speaking, we’d just need to agree on a global time. 😉
Or we can just come up with a zoom group and discuss photos in the pool, why we like it etc. For example, we choose 5 photos in the present week, and why it is a keeper for us. Lets keep it positive. The zoom could be casual, just to get things started and later maybe more discriminating, and discuss the week's entries; but will this eat a lot of time, and timezones will be a hat trick.
We attempted this 4-5 years ago, with a group of long-term members, We pulled it off, but only once. With group members scattered over the globe, live calls became next to impossible to coordinate. That said, I like the idea, and have been thinking of possible adjunct avenues to this Flickr group.....hoping to explore all things photography, in greater depth. I'll continue in that endeavor, and please let us know if you have any ideas.
ski 9:
I can easily imagine this beint too hard to work!
Was there a reaons it only happened once?
Would you, as our fearless leader, participate?
Teddy Alfrey: Coordination of schedules was the main reason. Just too hard to do on an ongoing basis, with people scattered around the globe. I'd be happy to help get it off the ground, and would participate as I could.
I'm going to think a little bit more about this. Before I retired from Otis Elevator Company (over a year ago), I hosted training calls frequently. I currently run two monthly in-person/Zoom meetings for the Bloomington Photography Club. So I wouldn't have a problem hosting a call, and I promise to keep it clean!
If a meeting were scheduled for 7 PM EST, that would be:
Depending on local time zone variations:
5 PM in California
Midnight in the UK.
1 AM in Germany, France, Spain, Austria, and Italy
2 AM in Greece, and Israel
Across the International time-line
9 AM in Japan
11 AM in Australia
If a meeting were scheduled for Noon EST, that would be:
9 AM in California
5 PM in the UK.
6 in Germany, France, Spain, Austria, and Italy
7 PM in Greece, and Israel
Across the International time-line
2 AM in Japan
4 AM in Australia
I think if we shot for a Noon EST meeting, on a weekend, that would make it more likely that people would attend, other than those all the way on the otherside of the planet.
I could also record the call, assuming everyone would be OK with that.
Of course, there is the language barrier and I wouldn't want to be non-inclusive. Possibly, if an English version were to work out, Someone speaking other languages could host calls for those folks.
While it would be cool to do a once-a-week thing, unless this is spectacularly successful, I think a once-a-month, or even every quarter might be a more realistic thing.
But then, there could be "pop-up" Zoom meetings where anyone could invite anyone to their own personal Zoom Workplace, or Room. Say a hot discussion about AI, OPA, or What Makes a Keeper.
I also wouldn't be opposed to sharing some of my Photoshop techniques (even one-on-one), and maybe others would too; possibly, with tutorials/demos of other photo processing software.
I think there's a lot of potential here, but I agree this might not be practical.
Teddy Alfrey superb! I am in! Is Zoom still the Most used Platform? If Not maybe Google meet? I think Zoom had a time Limit or am i wrong? I’d be find with English. I think if we use Google meet it could make a transcript or a summary with Gemini.
avwedemeyer:
One thing that Otis had trouble with was Zoom's 200-person maximum. We would frequently have over 300 people in a meeting. The Zoom folks allowed us to extend that to 1000, but then Otis is a big company.
My photography club sometimes runs as long as two-hours, with no trouble. Those meetings are long because of multiple people sharing multiple photos, with comments from everyone.
I don't imagine a meeting for the WEEKLY lasting longer than one-hour- at least at first.
I have been reading these and I think that if we do it maybe once a month that might work. I think it would a great way for us to get to know each other and better talk about how we see this art we make and how we approach it. I appreciate all the technical advise and suggestions I get here and I want to say thank you collectively to you all. Being part of this group has no doubt made me better. We do Zoom or in person critiques at DPS and it helps, Everyone stays positive even when stating what could be done for a bit of improvement. Sometimes the written word can come across wrong/harsh. I think sometimes we may need to watch our written tone and choice of words. If I freeflight something I try to give a good reason why I think it could be better. I am in no way as technical as most of you but I do have a good idea of what can be done with a photo for improvement. I think development is a choice of the artist. But again sometimes it works to enhance, sometimes not.
Sounds like there is interest, so the next steps might be:
- Survey the group for their level of interest. Include both active and inactive members, and, possibly, non-members we know that may have an interest.
- Find out which days, times and frequency work best for those who want to participate
- Develop a list of potential agenda items & discussion topics, with relative priorities
- Decide on how the group would operate (venue [Zoom, Google, etc.,] free flowing or discussion leader or something else?) and who would facilitate it (the same person, rotating responsibility or something else?). Live, taped delay, or both?
Anything else?

maybe you could do a doodle (hope this was the right name ...) or something to find the first date? do you have access to the emails?
The bad news, that I just now learned, is that the best way to do this is to have a “paid” Zoom account. if this is going to be a regular thing, it will be possible to create a "The WEEKLY" Zoom "group" on the Zoom website, but it's $13.33 a month. We could create a "The WEEKLY" "Basic/Free" Zoom account and share the login credentials with enough reliable people just in case a single person doesn't get kidnapped by aliens. Having more than one person with login credentials will make it possible to have consistent meetings if any one host can't attend. I only just now learned that the free account will only allow for up to 40-minutes per meeting. The paid accounts are 30 hours per meeting.
My photography club has a "Pro" $13.33 (billed annually, monthly is $15.99) account and it also has an "AI companion" that will supply a pretty good transcript of the whole meeting, and It's kind of spookily uncanny!
If the whole money element, and 40 minute maximum meeting time doesn’t crash this idea:
Since we don't have an email list, I think the only way to communicate this is to make sure it's obvious when the meeting is and the Zoom link is posted as a link on the main The WEEKLY front page.
Zoom meetings are pretty reliable, but sometimes problems happen with connections, wonky audio, etc. I'm guessing there will be very few problems, but it might be a good idea to do a test meeting, and if there are problems, we can call it a troubleshooting session. If there are no problems, we can talk about photography! However, it's common to have a few minor problems during the first couple of minutes of any Zoom meeting.
I would be happy to host a meeting, but I would also be pleased if anyone else (like somebody really good with Zoom?) wants to. Regardless,
I think the free account should be sufficient for the initial meetings. If everybody loses interest in the whole thing, then we don't need to worry about it. If it becomes very successful, and we really need more than forty minutes, I might be tempted to pay for it myself.
My estimates tell me that the best time to do this, for easy access for all members, would be to do it on a Saturday or Sunday at Noon EST. But that's only my estimate; if someone else has a better time, let's do it!
I'm a little concerned that this will be an English-only meeting, and I wouldn't want this to end up being a non-inclusive experience, but other than having Zoom meetings for different languages (and it could be done), I don't think there's much we can do about it.
I don't believe there is a rush to create a "The WEEKLY" specific Zoom group, and I could use my personal "Zoom Workplace" to host the first meeting. I'm tied up all this weekend (February 1-February 2- 2025), and I won't be available next Saturday, February 8, 2025, but I will be available on Sunday, February 9, 2025. Assuming we can all agree on the right time and my hosting. If someone else wants to host, that's peachy!
Thoughts?

I would love to do that , the Sunday is good for me. My personal Zoom is good for 45 minutes , I will look in Teams as well, that is similar but may give us more options. But again that is a microsoft product so it is tied to that software.
And anyone else!
We're talking about a week from today, which will be:
Sunday, February 9, 2025 at 12 Noon EST.
Here are the Zoom details:
Teddy Alfrey is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting.

The biggest problem will be the 40-minute limit that's part of a free Zoom account.
We will be stuck for that, for now. However, if this works out, I will create a photography-specific Pro-Zoom Account that will allow for a much longer time. If people eventually lose interest, I'll still have that account for any other photography stuff anyone wants to Zoom about. I would also supply my Zoom credentials for this new "workplace" to a few others, so If I'm not available for a specific meeting time, someone else could host using the same Zoom workplace that I created.
For now, if anyone wants to Zoom me directly, let me know.
My regular email is:
teddyalfrey@gmail.com
Or use Flickr messages
I would be open to "pop-up" meetings to discuss anything having to do with photography, and since I am retired, I should be generally available.

I am a member of a zoom meeting in the Netherlands.
Here we have it every 14 days.
12 pm will be 18:00 pm in the Netherlands I think.
We are going to discuss photos?
I think I can be there!

The goal is to "discuss photos" and/or photography in general. The first meeting might only be to iron out any bugs in the connection.
It would be fun for folks to introduce themselves and talk about how they feel about their photography.
We have a forty-minute limit for the time being, so we won't have enough time for very many people to discuss the current WEEKLY photos on display.
If this works out, I'll set up a pro-account with a 300 minute limit. I think any Zoom meeting lasting longer than two hours would be a bit tedious, but we'll have to learn the best way to go about things!

Other than mornings, weekends are pretty much out for me...but it would be cool if you could record the meeting and post a link here. Then, whoever wanted to listen and comment would have the opportunity to do so.....keeping the conversation going on this thread.
I believe I posted the video of today's (February 9, 2025) Zoom meeting and here is a link:
www.flickr.com/photos/teddyalfrey/54317064183/in/dateposted
We had the 40-minute, free Zoom account, limitation.
It's a 574 MB file, but it looks like Flickr took it on the upload page.
As of 1:05 PM EST, February 9, 2025, it's still saying "This video is being processed," in my Photostream.
It may be rejected as being too big. If so, I'll find another hosting site.
It doesn't look like this can be viewed from within the Zoom Workplace app, but maybe somebody knows how to make that work.

Didn't see these messages till just now, otherwise would have tried to join. I am in PST.
Looks like you guys had a good start! The video cut off at 30minutes, so not sure what happend to the last 10 minutes?
The Dropbox videos goes to 37 minutes. Once I read your messages, I checked the video I posted on Flickr, and it's only ten minutes long. There must be a ten-minute limit for Flickr Videos. I'll delete that one.
When I play the Dropbox version, I can play the end of the video, but it might be that DropBox only allows the first 30-minutes of each video to play. When I let the Dropbox video play, it went all the way to 37 minutes, but's playing from my Dropbox account.
I'll try uploading this to YouTube and see how it works out. I'll send a link to that once it's done...
All.. I am very sorry I missed this. I have had a car issue since Saturday and was out car shopping /window shopping for a car Sat and Sunday. I needed to see options. I will definitely make the next one
Well done !!!
I'm sorry I wasn't able to take part but kudos to you all for making it happen and Teddy in particular for his motivation and taking the lead.
I wouldn't worry much about the low attendance, it's all about quality, not quantity, and you have brought us back a bit closer to "being human", with a face and a voice and expressions and feelings.
I watched the whole meeting in youtube, thank you Teddy again
Three quick takes:
- at 2:13 Jan's been telling about a similar group where people submit 4 images that are reviewed in group during the zoom call, and he finds it very interesting because "everybody looks different" - I think what Jan is trying to say is everyone has a different way to see... to look at images... which is very true and what makes this type of peer reviews so valuable.
- Teddy showing interest in throw-camera techniques was quite a revelation !!! (LOL... tong in the cheek), now seriously, please do it !.
- Glen's question about legacy... what to do with our thousands of images, how to archive them in a way our descendants or future audiences may find them interesting to explore once we're gone... is a great question and legitimate concern. Not sure there's a simple answer to it.
Let's develop more these three interesting topics in our next video meeting!
I'll try to be there, I'm in Hawaii Time and still prisoner of the mundane and boring routine of having to go to work.
BRAVO !!!!
Thank you! I plan on doing more. It was a hoot having Jan and Glen to talk to!
I'm still thinking about it, but I think I will plan on staggering the days so that more people can attend, maybe even twice a week, to make it more possible for more to attend.
I've got my own ideas about what to do with archiving images and I think my system works well. I also think if other people have a workable system that is the main thing. I would be happy to discuss my workflow for archiving, but it does take some time. Once you reguarly give proper names (simple chronological names like "250212-My_Fantastic_Photo-0001" you're half way there.
There are many ways to gather people to review photos, using everyone's unique view of their concept of artistry. I will be leading a group in my local photography club, for photo critique. The only rule I will have is that everyone (or at least those who feel comfortable to do so) will first say something positive about a photo during the first round, and then the second round will be questions and suggestions, with no up or down vote. I think that online weekly review groups that require Keeper/Freeflight or Cool/Uncool is necessary, but when we meet up on Zoom, I don't think an up or down vote is necessary when we are face-to-face.
I also would like to explore others sharing what they do and their processes, but actually sharing their screens.
I'll send out some meeting notices sometime before the end of Friday- February 14, 2025.
Just a few more thoughts:
1- I strongly recommend to let this format of the video meeting naturally develop and "become" instead of forcing it into one or another direction. Just meet and let the conversation flow naturally. Unless is topic specific as mentioned in point 3.
2- I don't think using the video call to review submissions of the current week is a good idea. It's actually a conflict of interest where the meeting competes against the flickr group. The value of a video meeting is to complement flickr in was not possible otherwise. If anything use the call to encourage each other to write more and improve our participation.
3- The video call can also be used for other purposes than open conversations, like one or two photographers presenting their work or a project in particular, or someone teaching a master class, or processing an image under one or different softwares, etc. There's lots of possibilites.

At the bottom of this message is another invitation to a Zoom meeting at Noon EST, February 16, 2025.
There is no time limit, but I have scheduled one hour. If we want to run over, that's fine with me.
I agree with
ferlopez: that reviewing each of this week's photos is not a good idea, at least for the time being. I can't imagine that not requiring more than a couple of hours if we did something like that.
For now, let's keep it casual and stick to photography in general. It might be fun to share ideas on processing tips, new ways of seeing, our long-term photographic goals, etc. If somebody wants to give a ten to twenty-minute talk about their work or ideas, that would be cool! I'm open to anything and I don't want to particularly be in control of the discussion or how it all works!
I plan on doing a weekday meeting for those who can't do weekends before mid-March 2025.

Great meeting guys ! glad I was able to make it... 7am Sunday for me though... LOL
We covered lots of interesting topics, each one worth of its own meeting. We even ventured into futurology and sci-fi... I think we're lucky to be living in these times of technological revolution, when everything is changing at a pace so fast that is hard to grasp by our minds because it's never happened before in human history.
What took centuries before happens now in a decade, and what took decades within a year.
Embrace vertigo and brace for impact !!!
But no... I don't think we'll crash. It's more than let go of your ties with the past traditions and structures that keep you stagnant and embrace the flow of change because it's unavoidable... open the windows, fill up your lungs with fresh air, and enjoy the ride!

When talking film dynamic range vs digital, I my early experience recovering detail from a badly developed negative. My memory was playing some tricks on me, as usual, so the underdeveloped area was not pitch black as I described, yet results are impressive by today's standards. This was 10 years ago already
Digital cameras have improved a tremendously in the last decade and recovering similar detail from a digital raw capture is as easy, so no surprise there. But I do believe the popular concept of film having a very reduced dynamic range is misleading, if not flat out wrong. I would have to see lab tests and measurement results.
One can bracket the film scan for example, under different intensity of light, to under-expose or over-expose the scan, and recover details that way. Blend all later in layers, even treat it like HDR controlling the result to look natural.
This is a digital scan of the negative, photographed with a Nikon D800E:

And this is the digitally processed image

Here's the discussion thread:

As for the dynamic range of the negative, I think it depends on the type of the medium and its emulsion. A panchromatic black and white negative would generally have a wide range and a scanning process that would take multiple scans across the tonal range can recover both highlights and shadows well (can be pushed 10 to 20 stops). Color negatives generally struggle with recovering underexposed shadows mostly because of noise (which could be handled with a denoise software). They do perform well with highlight recovery, better than digital. And of course color positive film has a narrow dynamic range so once the highlight or the shadows are gone, they are generally not recoverable (hence the medium of choice for so many street photographers who did high-contrast street work).
I recorded the video on "the cloud," and it appears to work. Previously, I downloaded it on my computer.
It took a little longer for Zoom to process the video and arrive at a shareable link.
I downloaded the video and will post it to YouTube early this evening (February 23, 2025).
Here is the "shareable link" supplied by Zoom. It looks like a Passcode is required for access:
Passcode: s3tLy?+p
us06web.zoom.us/rec/share/wLrgv7PyNzKjI-eOKH6Wb5eeeNNelXa...
I'll send a link to the YouTube version later today.
Same time, next Sunday. If, sometime in the future, I cannot join, I'll share my login credentials with someone else for continuity.
Early in March, I will add a Mon-Fri meeting for those who can't attend on weekends.
Thanks so much for participating!

It was brought up that some people might not want to participate in these meetings because they don't want to be recorded.
I've had some good feedback about the videos, but if not recording the meetings will make it more likely for people to attend, we might need to discuss what we should do about it.
Thoughts?

I particularly find more value in sharing here an abstract of what we talked about, even extending the conversation in written form so those interested can join, rather than be recorded.
I'll cast my vote: NO RECORDINGS
Thanks Teddy again for the effort
We did some live review of Jan photos. Being able to talk back and forth about the image and our impressions and ideas is very dynamic and entertaining providing much more information and a richer experience.

Have only just seen this discussion. It's a very commendable idea.
Have just looked at some excerpts of today's video and sure, it has real potential.
RECORDINGS: if one can't make the meeting, it's certainly good to be able to see the video later. I understand that some of the group may have reservations about being online, so I guess they either use Zoom's 'no image' option or do not take part.
However for a handful of reasons, I won't be able to take part in the near future.
I like the idea of recording, and to be able to go back and review the discussion. The video link can remain as an unpublished and private video so that only those with a permitted link can access it.
It sounds like you guys had some good discussions. I think the recordings are a good idea, though they may inhibit some people when it comes to participating, or discussing things in totally forthright manner.
I do have one request… I think it advisable to only critique photos of those people who are an active part of your calls and have agreed to it, rather than including any image that has been posted to the Weekly Group. Thanks.

I agree that critiquing should only be done by those who participate in the call and agree to the process.
I like
I also think that NO Keeper Freeflight verdicts should be applied in Zoom discussions like this. I don't believe that dealing with each other face-to-face and in real-time requires that kind of judgment. It should be more of a conversation with questions, suggestions, and what-ifs.
When we are dealing with episodic text comments (like the usual WEEKLY format), it makes more sense to arrive at a yea/neh judgment along with discussion.
In my photography club, we invited a couple of jurors who helped choose photos for one of our meetings to explain why specific images were turned down. The jurors tried their best, and everyone had good intentions. Predictably, for some of us, it didn't turn out that well.

I like feedback (some people call it critiques) about photos in I am working on at this moment because my aim is growing in my photography. The way we discussed photos last Sunday in the Zoom meeting was friendly and open minded. To be there for another and helping each other is always fine. When you are not too shy and say what you are thinking about opinions then the conversation keeps going on. Thanks Terry for starting this meetings.

Really enjoyed watching the video and it's informative conversations. I'm such an amateur and just enjoying the dissection of how the image works. Just SOOC for me now as for whatever reason that's all I have the motivation for. I certainly have no issues with alterations and modifications. When I can join in I will but my observation talent is limited to comment significantly. Just enjoying your conversations!

East coast NOON is 7am for me reason why I'm joining in so late. But you had to leave earlier than me so starting later might not be an option.. is it?
1PM would be easier for me if possible.

Watching the video... Hi

Having wildlife walking around time is a blessing guys, no matter how dangerous it is or damage they might cause....
catwoodfield I use Capture One. Process each bracket respecting the exposure, only apply lens correction and noise reduction. Don't touch exposure or contrast, don't touch the color or saturation. Export all brackets as 16bit tiff or psd into photoshop or affitnity photo and merge there. Bring the merged image back as tif or psd into Capture One for final processing, now you can tweak exposure and color to your liking.

Maybe it is an idea to send in a picture and talk about it together in the zoom group....
Greetings Jan
I will be in Chicago all weekend, March 29-April 1, 2025. I originally thought I would be available for the Zoom call on Sunday, but just now learned that I am scheduled to attend a reception of my wife's group at that time, and spouses are encouraged to attend.
Because of this, I cannot host the regularly scheduled call for March 31, 2025.
I sent my Zoom login credentials to a few people, so if anyone want's to host the call, it could still happen. If the call does not happen, the next meeting will be on Sunday, April 6, 2025 at 1 PM EDT.
I apologize for any inconvenience.

Yesterday we were talking about this:
I need some more exercise.

I need some more exercise.

In addition, I learned interesting things - for example, about negative space, which I didn't even know about before. And a live analysis of the group's members' works is always interesting to see. I would even like to watch this in the format of a stream on YouTube.
This is a really cautious offer for the group to create their own YouTube channel )

I ran out of space on the Zoom server, so I copied it to YouTube. I've been remiss in sharing the link, so far...
Here is the link:

I'll post it in the "normal" discussion shortly- Thanks for rattling my cage!
Sorry for the delay!

Additionally,
I had forgotten that I will be in Boulder Colorado, this next weekend (May 1-5, 2025) so, I won't be able to host a meeting this weekend or post a WEEKLY photo.
If anyone want's to host the meeting for Sunday, please let me know and I'll give them the login credentials!!
I should be avaialble on the following weekend.

Thank you very much for the link, I watched it with interest. By the way - a question - Would you hang your photo on your wall? In my circles it means - Do you consider your photo a masterpiece that is worthy of being printed and hung on the wall and the viewer will look at it. This is a figurative question concerning the discussions about masterpieces in photography, your own and other authors. Can this or that photo of yours be called a masterpiece? Have you achieved such a result that you can declare your work a masterpiece?
Sorry for the delay, I've been traveling.
I simply think that using the criteria of "I would or would not hang an image on my wall" is useful for critical review.
I have a few of my own large photos, hanging on the walls in my house. That doesn't mean that my photos are better than everyone else's, and I believe there are many photographs that are better than mine. However, When visitors arrive, they usually know I'm into photography and are pleased to see my work because of the personal connection. We also have framed posters from my wife's academic talks on our walls.
To me, If someone uses the "I would hang this on my wall!" is as useless as "This is a great photo!" Dialog that's deeper than that is always best.
When it comes to whether any of my photos are "masterpieces," that's another story…
In general, my most recent batch of photos makes me feel like I am improving, and I often feel proud of my work and enjoy the satisfaction I get when things go right.
I would never be so narcissistic as to claim any of my photos are “masterpieces,” even if a broad consensus said they were.
It’s like when someone claims to be a patriot, and when I hear people brag about their patriotism, I roll my eyes. Of course, it’s good say “I want to be a patriot” or to call someone a patriot in the second person. (George Washington was a great patriot” or “Charles Degaulle was a great patriot.”) However, anyone boldly stating “I am a patriot!” is forcing a pretty big presupposition onto the listener, and I’m always suspicious of someone forcing presuppositions down my throat.
But, using the term “masterpiece” as a benchmark is a good tool!
I listened to a podcast a couple of years ago with an interview with one of the great street photographers. Unfortunately, I can’t remember his name, but he used the term “Where are the masterpieces?” when he was talking about photographers who include over-processing artifacts in their images. Viewers often say how great those photos are. But where are the masterpieces? So far, I’ve certainly never seen any.
Of course, someone might believe that their work rises above the norm of wide critical consensus, and even though there are what appear to be problems for some, those people just haven’t caught up with the photographer’s genius. I say to anyone who thinks that- Good luck because you will need it.

Next sunday and sunday 18th I cannot join. I am on holiday! Have a nice conversation!
I have scheduled another "the WEEKLY" Zoom meeting for tomorrow- Sunday, May 11, 2025 at 1 PM EDT.
I acquired COVID, probably during my trip to Colorado, but I'm feeling much better and looking forward to tomorrow's ZOOM!

To my great regret, I do not speak English((. I know Polish, Lithuanian and Russian. I will be looking forward to the recording of the conversation and will be infinitely grateful if this recording is released on YouTube, which allows me to watch with a language translation. Of course, if there are any difficulties, then I will freely watch the recording with Zoom.

Link posted! I've been dealing with COVID fatigue.
It's a shame about the language barrier, because you have a lot of valuable and interesting things to say.
Before I retried, I dealt with a lot of Chinese and South-Eastern Asian folks on Zoom meetings. It was difficult to communicate that well with technical stuff, and often we would be contraditing one another. However, our emails were concise and frosty! So, we always did the usual pleasantries in our meetings, but held off on the engineering stuff until we got back into emails... I miss those guys!
I've been reading your "Artists Intentions" comments and as soon as I'm not dealing with this fatigue, I will be participatory.
Thank you! In fact, I would be very interested in somehow taking part in the discussion.
For example, in your last discussion you touched on the topic of the possibility of setting the image in the viewfinder in monochrome mode. I know that there is a very interesting and difficult training - taking pictures when you have a black and white mode in the viewfinder. I admit that this is very difficult and unusual. More difficult than getting a black and white photo looking at the familiar color world through the viewfinder. But at the same time, seeing everything only in black and white through the viewfinder, we notice moments that are harder for us to see when everything is visible in the familiar color world.
I really don't know. Maybe we should start a separate topic here where we could discuss the interesting points raised during the discussion?
Hello Andrius! The monochrome camera that I shoot with, a Leica Q2M, only offers black and white through the EVF as the sensor itself has no Bayer filter and only "sees" luminance values. It can be helpful, I think, to see black and white through the viewfinder if one's intention is to shoot that way, but I don't think it matters all that much. Anyone who has dropped a roll of black and white film into their camera can do just fine to compose in black and white even though the viewfinder (which is typically optical) is presenting the world in colour. There are several photographers who are part of the Weekly community who image with black and white digital and film cameras. For the digital ones, the Leica M monochrome cameras have an optical viewfinder, as does the Pentax K3 III Monochrome.
As you say, seeing without colour can help to focus attention on other things relating to contrast, light and shadow, and other qualities of light or texture, which can be helpful. I often find that I can compose images (particularly ones where geometry is a dominant component) really quickly when I only see black and white through the viewfinder. Viewing in black and white through the EVF also allows you to see the impact of a colour filter (red, orange, green), and I find this great with a red filter which really darkens the sky, for example. If you are shooting with an optical viewfinder, you don't end up seeing the effect until you've developed the film or processed the digital file. In any case, if I am shooting black and white on a colour camera, with or without an EVF, I find my preference is to view any images on the camera screen in black and white to keep me in a monochrome headspace.
I am currently visiting Seattle, and I spent the day walking through an older part of the city shooting with the Q2M, and that resulted in a whole bunch of images that I shot because I knew that they would work well in monochrome, so that focused my attention on finding those shots.
Jeff
