Hi everybody!

I am a student who likes to take photographs as a hobby. I’m relatively new to photography and was wondering if anyone could give me some feedback/ advice on my work?

Hi there Olivia! as a amateur photographer im in doubt if am qualified to give some kind of advice. Conversely you already have a great eye based on what i see on your galleries and i truly believe thats the right way to go, congrats and keep it up and experimenting :D

Hi Olivia! For a student, some of your photos are a good start and I encourage you to keep shooting. Working a bit on composition always help, although I realise that when we travel, this is not always easy as we have less time. To be quite frank, what annoys me when I visit a Photostream is when I see many almost identical photos of the same subject. Sometimes you have four almost identical shots. Posting the best one or two would be more enjoyable for the viewer. A few of your shots of the Meteora Monastery are very good, as is the Streets of Rome. Good of you not to be afraid to ask for feedback. Just enjoy taking pictures, experimenting and getting to know your camera. Have fun. Not every souvenir travel shot is meant to be a work of art.

Hi olivianewland10, its important to understand that your photos are personal to you, many try to please others , there are hundreds of pieces of advice that exist and many make a living of dispensing advise and tutorials , I think that your images are interesting and im now following you , ive been taking photos for many years and well are my photos better than yours, it will always be a matter of opinion. Do what you want, keep the horizon level ( except when you dont) place the most important thing in the centre ( except when you dont) Keep the focus sharp ( except...) keep shooting keep sharing , one of the famous photographers Henri Cartier-Bresson said Your first 10,000 photographs are your worst. To be honest and I've been to an exhibition of his images and i didnt like any of them, so there you go , what interests you about the image , keep this in mind when you take a shot, all the best and good luck

Hi Olivia
The main thing you should aim for in your photography is for YOU to like your images. As a fully trained and experienced camera club judge, I could critique your images, but it would still only be MY opinion. Ask another judge, and they would likely give a different opinion.

All sorts of factors are involved in a 'good' photograph, one of the most important aspects (in my opinion) is emotional impact.

As for technical quality, these are the sort of things I would look for as a judge:

Correct point of focus - making sure the important part of the subject is in focus

Appropriate depth of field

No camera shake

Correct exposure - this again could be subjective - I love high and low key images, for instance

Appropriate control of tonal range - this is especially important in black and white images - the blacks should be black and the whites white, otherwise it is a grey and grey image

Composition to direct the viewer to look where the author intended

No inappropriate backgrounds or distractions

Unless intentional tilt, horizon and verticals should be straight.

Most of the above are taken from the Royal Photographic Society's guidance on how to achieve their distinctions.

Lastly, remember - rules are there to be broken.

Good luck, Grete
