Good enought for Explore, but not this group. Oh, well.
Gregor Vukasinovič Posted 18 days ago
Bad for you I guess. Also, Explore is fully automated. If enough people click on the thumbnail, it ends up in explore. Never once has any human said it's "good enough".

Bridge rejection is a recent policy change. Happy to hear from the membership about whether this is a good or bad move.

Are bridges architecture, or engineering? Does it depend on the bridge? What objective criteria ought to be used?

WalrusTexas:

Put me in the "varies by bridge" camp. Erasmus Bridge (Rotterdam)? Engineering. The one in Cleveland w the Guardians? Architecture. Manhattan Bridge? I think it has enough ornamental elements to qualify as architecture.

Thank you for taking the tine to respond and explain the rational for the rejection. I appreciate it.

Point_and_Shooter: TBH, I had no role in its rejection and am neither moderator nor admin. Perhaps you meant to reply to WalrusTexas?

Yes. Sorry about that.
I would consider the Douglass Memorial Bridge architecture as the design is not just functional, but aesthetically pleasing.
The Edith Farnsworth House, in Plano, Illinois, designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, has no ornamental elements but is considered one of the most important examples of modern architecture.

Just because a photo is considered excellent by enough people that it gets an Explore, it doesn't mean that it belongs in every group the photographer is a member of.
Many of the groups I am a member of are plagued by people who can't be bothered to read the group's rules.

Excluding bridges from an architecture group (and one that claims to be “unlimited”, at that!) makes no sense at all.

Bridges are among the major, most famous, most spectacular and most popular feats of architecture that can be, and have always been. Building something over void is the ultimate architectural challenge.

Dominique_R: And they're spectacularly absent from your Photostream !!! ?? 😀

Right, and I do not eat lobster very often, which does not bar me from saying that it is one of the most glorious foodstuffs a Michelin-starred chef can cook! :o)))
The Real Frank Lynch Posted 13 days ago
Dominique_R: That's their choice. Regrettable that this is the only architecture group on Flickr.

That’s their choice.

Oh, absolutely. But (as you very well know, because you responded too) above one of the admins (not moderators) also said: “Bridge rejection is a recent policy change. Happy to hear from the membership about whether this is a good or bad move.”

Them “hearing from the membership”is exactly what I was doing.

Dominique_R: True. My snark was uncalled for and I apologize.

The Real Frank Lynch:
I would personally argue that Erasmus Bridge is both architecture and engineering. They seem to have paid attention to both aesthetics and functionality when designing it.

“None taken”, as they say. We're good.
