For birds; Canon T1i, Canon EF 100-400 f/4.5-5.6L IS USM, hand held for birds almost all the time though I have a decent Manfrotto 352RC ball-head and tripod for times when it can be used. No grip.

Sigma 70-200mm HSM F2.8
Used to have Panasonic FZ-7 superzoom with Olympus Tcon 1.7x. This was great but have moved to Pentax k-x (from k-m and Tamron for better noise - see photostream) and Pentax 55-300mm and do have Kenko 1.5X teleconverter but not had light for it yet. In very good light I am not sure that DSLR is that much better to be honest, considering the difference in weight etc.

Nikon D300 with a Tamron 28-300 f/5-6.3 lens. Seriously considering swapping out the telezoom for a Sigma 150-500 f/5-6.3 lens with image stabilization (whatever they call it). Will probably also add a 1.4 extender.
Now ten months into my first SLR and loving it!

Most times, it is the Olympus Camedia C-765 Ultra Zoom digital point-and-shoot with the 10-times optical zoom.
Sometimes it is the Sony Handycam DCR-SR62 digital camcorder with a built-in digital still camera feature and with the 25-times optical zoom.
Hoping either later this year or early next year to purchase either the Olympus E-620 or the E-30 digital SLR with a really good telephoto zoom lens.

my fav birding lens for now is a hanimex 75-200mm f/4.5 manual lens still saving for a sigma 70-300mm :)
I also use a vivitar 135mm lens that I had gotten for a film slr nearly 30 years ago coupled with a 2x converter with good light and stopped down to f8 or f11 takes some very sharp photos

I'm not a real birder, but when i chase local wild life, its just a Nikon d40 and a Tokina 500mm f/8 mirror lens. I also have a ProOptic 500mm f/6.3 but the DOF is extra-razor thin and the lens is quite a bit larger so I've settled on the Tokina lately.
