Hello, everyone!
Some time ago our group organized a series of contests and routinely featured selected photos to showcase your talents and allow you to share your most interesting photos with other members of the group.
As you may be aware 30 April was National Bird Day and to celebrate Flickr wants to highlight all the awesome bird photography on Flickr! From bird lovers, to bird watchers, to the snapshots of the bird on the feeder outside your window - we want to see your bird photography! Whatever it may be - we invite our group members to share your favorite bird photo and the story of how you captured it.
To include a photo in your discussion reply, include the Flickr photo URL between brackets. For example: "[YOUR PHOTO URL GOES HERE]."

Thanks for sharing your photography with us. Photos and stories shared in the thread may be featured in a Flickr gallery and on the Flickr blog!

The Brown Pelican is a comically elegant bird with an oversized bill, sinuous neck, and big, dark body. Squadrons glide above the surf along the western coast, rising and falling in a graceful echo of the waves. They feed by plunge-diving from high up, using the force of impact to stun small fish before scooping them up. I photographed this unusual sight of a pelican spreading its areodynamic wings to actually ride the crest of a wave at Martins Beach near Half Moon Bay, California
This lovely lad was baited in with an Oak Eggar Moth caterpillar and promptly stole off with it, just catching the light coming through the trees. Paused just long enough for the AF to lock and I managed to pan with him despitethe uncropped frame being in portrait.
What makes this photo so special is that I am located in CHICAGO, not the South!
This limpkin has taken up temporary residence in the CHICAGO BOTANIC GARDEN from mid-August until now....
On this particular day, it treated us to a show on how to find and open large mollusks. This photo shows it skipping across the pond on its way to the shore to pound on it and open it up.
Female Satin Bowerbird. Have wanted to get a decent shot of One of these beauties for the past 18 months, and finally, I had my chance.
I was simply in the right place, at the right time. This female was very relaxed and I got a bunch of shots.
Cheers,
Dave

I shot this November 9, 2023 with a 7D Mark ii and Sigma 100-400mm Contemporary. We had our first Autumn snow and I was out at the lake taking some landscapes. Spotted this Heron under some trees in the water, swapped lenses, and got this shot.
'I'iwi (Vestiaria coccinea)

The "I'iwi or Hawaiian Honeycreeper, is an endemic bird species of the Hawaiian Islands. It is listed as extinct on Lana'i, very scarce on O'ahu and Moloka'i, and fairly common on Kaua'i, Maui and Hawaii. This photo was taken on a hike near Mauna Loa on the Big Island of Hawaii.
*Taken with my first Canon SRL camera, a 50D with a Canon 70-200mm lens. Didn't know much about photography then; more luck than skill! As of 2008 the I'iwi is listed as Vulnerable.

I think this Hoopoe have chicks to feed because he left immediately after finding a worm and not eating it.
I was in Buenos Aires, with a brand new camera that I wasn't familiar with. I accidentally shot this photo in manual mode, and significantly underexposed it.
Thankfully, with a bit of post processing to sort out the levels, this was the result. I'm so glad I was able to save it, as this is one of my favourite bird photos, taken in one of my favourite places in the world.

Hello, I am new to this group and mainly capture nature and wildlife, and of course a lot of birds. 😉 So I think that is the right group for me. It's nice to meet you all. And for this small challenge, I share with you this photo of a blackbird in a coniferous tree that I captured.
Quite a difficult decision! After some thought I think the Little Grebe family is my fave, though the White-tailed Eagle was a close second. I practice 'run and gun' bird photography, so I don't use lures or portable hides, makes it harder to get good results but I'm too lazy to do it any other way!

This was shot at the Smithsonian Zoo with my Nikon 70-200; the funny part is it's my favorite shot from the day but not a zoo exhibit!

This pretty bird unexpectedly landed in front of me on the aloe plant so I was able to capture him even without a telephoto 😄
Visiting Hioroshima and this chap was just doing his thing on the river bank, right in the middle of the city.
I was allowed to get really quite close without any disturbance shown at all.
For me it showed they do not view humans as any threat at all - quite different in my home country , this same bird would not have let me anywhere near as close and certainly would not be found in a city centre.

A recent trip to Japan was an opportunity to photograph these stunning Steller’s Sea Eagles. mostly found in the Russian Far East and Hokkaido in northern Japan, the Steller's sea eagle is listed as "vulnerable" by the international union for conservation of nature, with fewer than 5,000 left in the wild.
I was on a boardwalk surrounding a pond in the northern Everglades. Looking down toward the water, I observed this Heron, slowly leaned over the railing and took a picture.

This one of my prefered bird's picture, taken in my garden. I love the interaction between these two siblings.
