Great series. I bought the book. I suggest you flickrmail David if you would like to do the same.
It is a beautiful series but it does not accent what I have always loved about David Solomon's photography. Yes the Brazil series is pretty, graphic, colorful.
But it is these photos below of David Solomon's that feel so unique to me, so different from other street photographers. I mean in many of his photos the persons' inner thoughts seemed to be exposed and they become transparent. These are the photos actors should use to study from. Yes they are messy and not in a shiny perfect package, but that is what I like about them. It is that unique talent that he has that has made me actually learn more from him then any other photographer really. It is like I am seeing these people's private emotions. Like I can feel them.

From a learning point of view, I'd be interested in the process and thinking behind this edit. Looking at the whole Brazil set, there are some omissions I don't understand.

well mort* i can tell you so much teasing went into it that it took us ages to finally say we satisfied our thought process...you'll just have to surrender to the process and us pesky admins to find out just how the process behaves.

actually Mort* i'm glad you said out loud what we've been discussing internally...
it's likely you will see the thought process on upcoming submissions based on changes to how we might work through submissions in the future.
so thanks!

@Schveckle... I think you might me missing the point...
The goal of this new promotion approach is to seek out and promote images that would 'Never' get promoted to HcSP on their own, meaning it's the sequenced set that provides the promotable magic....
If we promoted the images you cited we would just be re-promoting images that are already in the pool…except all at the same time...a pretty pointless task except for fame and fortune….and you can go find these sets in the Killer Sets thread…so the fame and fortune has already been covered.
And in the future I think we will see even more ambitious implementations of this idea…so fasten your seatbelts for the next candidate!!!!…I’m certain everyone will be almost viciously surprised by how far we may bend this concept…
I can hear it now.."What...That's not Street!!"….:-) ....
No...that's not single-image street :-))

one 'not' quick answer...pH[India]..
and this is an answer i've arrived at during a chat with David.....he might have a better way of explaining it....but my explanation is this...
We were looking for a set of images where every image was not a stand-alone HcSP image, .....David did not shoot that set....or another set we looked at before Brazil ....with this philosophy in mind.....(as evidenced by them already being in HcSP! )
i chuckle when i think of David saying.....if i wanted to shoot it that way..i would have shot it that way ;-).....
Please keep this in mind when you submit a set...we're not looking for killer sets....you can make them yourself and if someone else thinks they are killer...then they will get linked and discussed in the killer sets thread (they are likely already in the pool if they are full of stand-alone images)
we’re really enhancing our promotion practices to not just promote stand-alone images. We’re now looking to celebrate individual photographers that can see past the power of the individual image to assemble a coherent essay of images...
sets of images where the whole is stronger than an individual part...visual sentences with variety, texture, and pace......images that work together to reveal human condition with story arcs and reflective pauses.
This is all about letting you sit in front of the HcSP slide-show view with a glass of wine or what ever other reflective devices you find appealing....and feel that all visual morsels possible....are possible now in HcSP
..

Congrats David and admins - a very well-chosen 16. A few stand-out images I hoped would make it did, but the whole is well-paced and flows smoothly. It also seems to me that the compositional links between images are as strong as the thematic ones.
Good work, and inspiring too. Can't wait to see what's next...

Thanks everyone. I think I went for this set as I felt the London work was a bit too familiar with most people and it was more manageable to edit this work down to a small number. Anyhow it's been an enjoyable experience putting these pictures together and I hope you enjoy them.
I shall look forward to seeing some great series of images by other people soon.
Cheers.

There are some questions and answers about brazil in my blog. I scheduled this completely independently of the hcsp stuff, but it ended up happening at the same time! It might be a good complement after you've seen the slideshow.
ph... why india and not milano? cool set. some pics look more like drawing than photograhy to me, but - well done.
I think David Solomon's street photography of English scenes is terrific and certainly worth the time for an extensive look. For this type of photography he has the luxury of a good population density and an active street life, something not often found out in the American West, (where streets are often filled with automobiles but no people), in contrast to Mexico where streets are alive with pedestrian traffic. But I find the Brazil series not having these same dynamics, a bit remote and perhaps not coming to grips with the different lighting conditions, just the same an A for effort.

why are these images in the pool? they are not even "street photography" based images in the classic sense.

Just had a look and the work is very good.
So who managed to pick the photos not worth looking at from a nice body of work??

See, signing off "The RG" and painting weird shit on your face (in your user icon) is not, perhaps, the greatest way to gain credibility, generally, or here, specifically. And then you go and make your first (correct me if I'm wrong) post a bizarrely inane comment about a bunch of photos that from the discussion (and interview - linked to somewhere, I'm certain) are clearly more than just "holiday snaps". In addition, you do that annoying thing where you not only allude to Henri Cartier-Bresson (the patron saint of those who proclaim to know everything about shooting photographs that sometimes get labelled "street photography"), but you shorten his name to "C-B" - a sign of sheer laziness, frankly. If you have enough energy to type out your scathing analysis of David Solomon's (O, I see you shortened that, too) photography, then perhaps you can just about manage to type out his name (and Cartier-Bresson's) in full?
Now, I'm just saying all that as a step by step breakdown of what you probably did wrong, in your post above, as a service to you, because I'm almost 100% positive most other people responding are going to just pile on the shit.
And I sort of hope it comes by the ton.

Read the thread, dude, truly. There's nothing wrong with making an argued case for why you think the shots in the gallery aren't up to scratch, but it is probably sensible to check out the background before just, like, jumping into the fray...

Hi Scribeoflight,
Just bluring your face (in your user icon) is not, perhaps, the greatest way to gain credibility, generally, or here, specifically. back at ya.
Seriously what was it a shot in the mirror Fan Boy stylie but you missed focus.
(Had a look at your output and it's very good.)
I still think the shots are not up to much and are infact the worst of David Solomon's (I have writen it in full in-case you can't work out who I am talking about) images which are quite OK in general.
I know I am not much of a photographer but I still have an opinion,
and that is, who managed to pick the photos not worth looking at from a nice body of work??
Oh Henri Cartier-Bresson L'amour tout court.
Bye Scribeo................

You mean from David Solomons or from Brazil by David Solomons? I'd say that his work in Brazil and his work in London are pretty (although not extremely) different, so I could understand that different people were drawn to them.

@rangefinder: Perhaps it's the quality of your photography, or simply the quality of your opinion, but the resonance your views have here seems to be zero, and those who disagree (see all the positive feedback above) care so little about what you have to say that barely any can be bothered to argue.
Food for thought.
