Groups we like

BennehBoy Posted 16 years ago
There are a number of groups which are related to HCSP by way of people, vibe, or just the fact that they are pretty damned cool.

This thread is a place where we can share those groups, not necessarily street, that we think fit into the HCSP extended family.

To kick things off here are few groups that I like - I also happen to have started one of them and I couldn't resist the opportunity to pimp it.

La Pura Vida
Fotografi di Strada
la familia abrazada
Contract Killers
Populated by Vegetation - ahem

Please also see this thread about other street groups: Neighbours & Relatives

okay what hasn't been named yet.

my two faves are
your photo isnt really that great - www.flickr.com/groups/yousuck/
oatmeal trannosaurus harmony - www.flickr.com/groups/455865@N22/
i think. both really into participation and association etc.

and i like these too:
high and low - www.flickr.com/groups/highandlow/
at war with the obvious - www.flickr.com/groups/mundane/
photographs on the brain - www.flickr.com/groups/photographsonthebrain/
dirty style - www.flickr.com/groups/dirtystyle/

and then i like some groups dedicated to a specific kind of picture, becuase it's what i'm into, like 'shots of backs are boring' 'anonymousness' 'shoe stories' 'torsos' (a pattern, perhaps?)
'children of weegee'

oh oh and not to forget shameless group promtion
hardore bike photography - www.flickr.com/groups/virtualbikelane/
rule of third beers - www.flickr.com/groups/liquidcourage/

:)

We're on extended hiatus in Spotlight Seven, but it really was kicking-ass good back at its peak. Find me a few great portraitists and light a fire under smoothdude's ass & we'll be back in business.

Or this: www.flickr.com/groups/bokehschmokeh/ in response ;)
flat5 Posted 15 years ago
skinny, i don't think those two groups are opposites.

marja's group doesn't have the whole bokeh thing going on.
skinny_man (somewhere else) Posted 15 years ago
Awww, ok! But they are both funny though.
full finger [deleted] Posted 15 years ago
@skinny Marja group is a high level interesting group , Bokehschmokeh is kind of poor .
skinny_man (somewhere else) Posted 15 years ago Edited by skinny_man (somewhere else) (member) 15 years ago
Jeeze! I was only trying to have a bit of light-hearted humour guys!
I've only been around this group for a short while. You guys seem to take yourselves a bit too seriously!
Bokehsmokeh is totally tongue-in-cheek.

justinsdisgustin Posted 15 years ago
that's not funny!

@skinny_man: Perhaps we just have a different sense of humour?

And if we take ourselves too seriously, then you're a bit too sensitive to snark....
123regina.tumblr.com Posted 15 years ago
skinny_man (somewhere else) Posted 15 years ago Edited by skinny_man (somewhere else) (member) 15 years ago
Ok, sorry. I'm scottish - that hopefully explains (but maybe not excuses) the sense of humour.
I did get a bit too defensive there didn't I? Did not mean to offend.
Never been accused of being sensitive - I seem to always get in trouble for being the opposite ;)

Here's a couple i like:

And yes, I guess there's some self-promo here
Simone Alexandra Posted 15 years ago
I always feel kinda bad about doing self promo so then i don't. But alas its almost 6 in the morning and i haven't slept yet which means my guards are down and also I'm desperately craving chocolate muesli bars.

It's getting quite difficult to get a shot into this -- the pool is looking pretty good, possibly the best country-level street group on flickr?
Gekopaca Posted 15 years ago
I started few months ago a group called "Pure R-D1 Pictures".
It's lightly curated, and you will find rather good street photos in.
www.flickr.com/groups/pure_r-d1_pictures/
lesleyvillenue Posted 15 years ago
Anything that Artie is moderating. He isn't given enough credit around here. His sense of moderation and democratic spirit have kept many a troubled thread from bouncing on turbulent waters.

Boung Posted 15 years ago
can i blatantly use this space to promote my newly *literally* created group focusing on Bangkok Street Photography? well anyway here goes;

www.flickr.com/groups/krungthepstreet/

the reason being that, hey, Bangkok (my hometown) is so damn underrepresented in any genre of photography. it's a shame really, Bangkok has a vibe unlike any other. perhaps it's just so damn hard to photograph well, being not as chaotic as, say, Indian cities, nor as iconic as, say, Chinese cities. just look through HSCP pool for instance, there's so few photo from Bangkok, and not very good one at that (compare to the later standard of acceptance). anyway it's curated by me, so the standard might be off.
StuConFlo Posted 15 years ago
@ Boung: Now that's what I call heavily curated.
Boung Posted 15 years ago
hey it was created 5 hours ago! and try to find interesting street photo from bangkok! i spent 2hours and found like 5 passable images. so disheartening. bangkok is like the black hole of good photography (unless there's political unrest)

carvalho - try Figures in a Landscape. MDM at 'Peopled' is into other stuff now.
CarvAndre Posted 13 years ago
cool! I'm finding I like this genre, but I don't know exactly how to classify it yet. It's not exactly street, it's no based exclusively on graphical elements but it's not anything else also. When I read MDM's post about this, I was already 30 months too late, and now it's hard to find a good curated group pretty much about anything here.

okay, this might sound a bit like a diss, but it's not intended so. a genuine question: what is the use of yet another group with the same pictures in it?

123regina:

Regina, you 're right up to a point, however in this group you can see pics like this one

or this one

or this one

not exactly "street" as most people mean it.. (and of course you can see some of the well known gems) :)

and another thing, it's not a "new" group! It's an old one, a bit "transformed".

Double X Street

www.flickr.com/groups/double-x-street/

A group created to highlight a pool of some current photographers who show work on flickr and to bring discussions on female photographers who are less contemporary or non-flickr members - these are street photographers who happen to be female. An archive to view some intriguing photographs and hopefully to become a resource when that nagging question arises 'Where are all the female street photographers?'

Please read the group rules, all are welcome to join.

The Asphalt Jungle

www.flickr.com/groups/the-asphalt-jungle/

The aim of The Asphalt Jungle is to playfully pay homage to cinematic history through Street, Candid and Documentary Photography.

Photographs should be reminiscent of a particular director, cinematographer or genre of cult and classic cinema history.

Photographs that interest are of a Street, Candid or Documentary nature and may get comments like "Hey, this reminds me of so-and-so". The photos should have an essence of a film maker or particular genre of cinema history that shines through.

It will help if you include a reference to the film, actor, genre or director your photo reflects.

Take a look through the pool before submitting, enjoy The City Under the City!

i know there's others out there such as ANIMANIAC, ANIMALogic, An Odd Zoo, and Hardcore Animal Farm Photography (note: inactive for 2y, but great pool), but they all fit different aesthetics. not sure about the ethics and politics of posting your own group here, but hey, it's a group that i like and contains none of my photos
