Surroundings
Places seems familiar when you stay there for long, but still it seems detached to you in some way. I am just documenting my attachments and detachments with my surroundings at a place where i feel like home away from home.

Milano on the Surface
I didn't know much about Milano when I visited in 2007. In a way I wanted to know as little as I could, as I thought that anything that caught my eye straight away had to be representative of the city. Milano on the surface is a fashion capital and a bussines centre.

okay about the not 100% intentional thing, before i les others go do their thing. i just picked these from the slightly bigger pile i have for this now and i was putting them in an order where some of them don't sit next to each other, etc, you know how that goes and then i saw that when i put them beneath each other in this order it was sort of a from the ground upward into the air thing, that's what you mean, right benneh?
(actually works better with the bottom two swapped, but was also thinking about placement of 'portraits'. and it would also work better if flickr would learn that portrait images need to be centre aligned, not left aligned. was just thinking about that and i think form now on i am going to upload my pictures as a square with white on the left and right/ top and bottom so it sort of does that automatically).
anyway, i heard i justify my photographs too much... so i'll stop now.
thanks for the positive feedback. i wasn't fishing for it or thinking my stuff was that bad, just, well compared to jinju's stuff i guess almost anyone would feel embarrassed to upload something and i like streetflickr's set a lot as well.
edit: i said smaller but i meant bigger.

Started this about a year ago to try something that operates as more than a bunch of "one offs", through some kind of visual cohesion and mood. Haven't done much on it lately, but want to pick it up again when the sun stops setting so fricken late.
yeah i love that one daniele

Mixing verticals and horizontals give me some kind of stroke. I know it's more about how flickr presents them in here. On a wall is different story.
I'm sure I'm going to regret doing this.. anyway..

there's not a real theme (ehm..uhm.. well.. "tits", maybe..), and they're obviously not taken from a single project. still I quite like them together, even if they look quite different each other (and probably, even more beacuse of that). quite curious to hear something about #6. does it fit there, or in this edit generally?
(DISCLAIMER: it's 5.45am here..)
EDIT: took the last one off after olov's suggestion

EDITEDIT: now I do even have a theme: tails! (thanks luca for that, I didn't notice that myself..)

I second Pachinko, I would be cool to let each set breath a bit. Oh and also putting numbers in front of each picture would be practical.
Hinius, I remember seeing those pictures in an edit already so I guess it's not the first try? I feel the relation between the anthropic and the wild is pictured in a more complexe way than the first time I saw the pics so I guess it's a good edit. The blunder here would be to have it looking too much like an environmental militant's statement, like "look how man is bad"..
I think the pollution one is the wrong one to finish with, not open enough and too pessimistic. Also n°3 and 9 are the weakest for me.
Ciarli, I know people here like that last one.. I do too but it completely breaks the retro cabaret (?) mood. Otherwise, cool!

ha! olov, I think you're totally right about the last one. that's my default ending image for a lot of series (or better, of a single series that I already edited in a million different ways), so I just put it in there without thinking twice. still not completely sure it doesn't fit at all. I mean, it couples pretty well with the first one, hands, gesture and so on, but I guess the edit might work better without it.

@ Ciarli: I think #6 definitely has all its place there. To me, the series of tails (or similar) seems to be a stronger common theme than tits (I agree with Olov, the last one contrasts a bit with the overall mood). Whatever, I really really love your set.

By far I like Hinius's edit the best, although I word hardly describe it as street work. But, it is an interesting thing to contemplate how the definition of street has changed from the early days of our forefathers, aka Bresson, Brassai, Winogrand to our more contemporary siblings such as sobol, goldin and soth. It is interesting to see this shift in the wider public perception of street photogtraphy as a genre. So, Hinius work as an edit fits together so well, although it is somewhat misplaced in this forum of HCSP.
But, alternatively, I think that its GREAT that hcsp has widened its horizons to encompass work that wouldn't be typically described as street photography, especially 20 years ago perhaps, but as I said earlier, there has been a change in the horizons of photography as a genre, especially in the art market, like galleries, print magazine, and online galleries like this that seem to be becoming increasingly popular with the advent of the internet as they give photographers a chance to show their work.
Also, Matt's and Daniele's work seems to be some pretty hard hitting street work. I adore those street shots, very reminiscent of Kavlar's high toned street work, earthlings. It is really possible to sense the formidable dark streets and you almost expect James Dean to walk past with his hands in his pockets in the rain (although that wouldn't be possible given the date these were taken - recently I presume). These two edits probably fit more into this group of hcsp, but like I said before, the parameters have changed recently to include all genres, as long as they were shot with a wide angle or have a street feel.
Regina has got a great talent there and has come across in a very modest way in her introduction and presentation. I wouldn't be surprised if one day I am walking down greenwhich and this work presented in a gallery. Well done to everyone who has contributed here.

Benneh, then I hope people will comment a lot, because with 100 edits of 10 pictures on one page, the browsing is going to get hectic, especially on my crappy laptop! An other reason is visual continuity.. well anyway, not that important..

but thanks lasalis :)
maartyn, i like the beginning of your edit a lot more than the end, if that makes any sense. the further down the line the less connection between the images. for me anyway.

Alastair, those shots have an eerie feeling about them. I really enjoyed that particular series, so thanks for sharing that. I think that it was Hitchcock who directed that movie, 'the birds' (probably mistaken) that had crows or ravens. I guess pigeons are sometimes called the rats of the sky by some parties.
Your series seems to incorporate this hitchcockian element that really 'takes off', pardon the pun. I guess that it is in our human nature to fear those things above us, that are out of our grasp, however this academic theory more pertains to the crows which seem to enjoy their elevated lofty position more than the pigeons, which seem don't seem to take advantage of that as much.
I guess some religious iconography could be in place with these shots as well, with the pigeons representing the force of evil, or something that is often in our midst, but with which we can't communicate with. Or something way above us like the devil or spirits.
Anyway, keep going with this series as it certainly is inspiring. Cheers>

I would like to trust the members "bienséance" (can't find the english word for that..), but I've been following the image critic thread too long..
Alastair, it's funny, Mr Karanka just posted a similar theme in "others edit". In contrast yours seem very weak as single pictures. And, apart from the fact that mixing colour and b&w is almost a deal breaker for me, I don't think flying rats is a transcendental theme..
Cheers

The series is called "Nairobi walking", an allegory of Kenya's cultural shift and walk to modernity. (All pictures are processed on a laptop so plz don't look too closely at the technicals..)

yes, very interesting thread with lots of great narratives. I particularly like the way BryanF's seem to work. I like the way the first three are so woven together in a certain composition style (hard to describe) then the next two are a little different but somehow the transition isn't abrupt. Maybe because it goes from a grey shot to two that are united by blue?
I thought street always included people? I see a few series without so I'll throw in one I'm working on that was shot from the street (in different locations and climates) but doesn't include people.

Therrr, thanks for the first post that does something different to a straight sequence!
I quite like I Hardly Know Her for looking at sets and photostreams on Flickr. Before you could view anyones stream with the site. Now they need to opt-in first. It's great for viewing a bunch of photos large. It removes a lot of the extra cruft on Flickr. For example, a few photos from my neighbourhood.

This is a fascinating thread. Really cool to see small series from people as opposed to one-offs. I wouldn't have thrown these in if not inspired by other participant's 'unpeopled' edits, as well as a re-occurring motif of water.

@regina, I thought you only had st. Niklaas. so Claus can't dissapoint he doesn't ever appear, or?
I second bryanF's sentiment. flickr's got to figure out some new tools for managing displaying one's images as well as thread management. They need to have the phlow guys to come in and revamp their UI.

@barbara: those are brilliant! nice that you uploaded some sort of memorabilia
@bryanF, Yep. I was just trying to point to an interface I think works better. It's a shame you can't do something similar within the group view here. Flickr has kind of stagnated with respect to improving their interface. The site really hasn't changed all that much in the last few years. (Since the 'big' redesign.) It doesn't help that most/all of the original developers have moved on or been fired.

Hey Faberitius - that was an interesting take on the beach. I am curious, what is the reason for the long distance between yourself and your subjects? Are you scared of offending them by taking photographs, or is it for aesthetic purposes. The reason that I ask is I often have been accused by friends of shooting to far from my subjects, hence I have been making a concerted effort to get closer. Don't take this the wrong way because I like your subject placement and I was interested in your reasoning for this. I like the desolate feeling of the beach with just a subject or two in the corner of the frame. Thanks for sharing.
Great stuff Lung! The pictures have this tender and personal feeling to them and I really enjoyed the almost not disrupted veil/canvas theme that I read as a sort of allegory of a cocoon, strengthening the idea that you where very close to your subjects. I also read the last picture as a sort as an abrupt seperation.. sad in a poetic way..
(I would remove n°5 - no as good as the rest, and maybe also n°6 from the edit - despite it being a good picture)
@Karanka: it's the admins choice, edit the edits ;-)

Lung thanks for sharing - that was a superb edit. For me the only photo that I would have removed would have been #5 with the guy staring directly at the camera. There was something in his expression that jarred with me and I felt that it was out of kilter with the rest of the expressions on the people's faces. Superb lighting overall adding up to an evocative feeling.
