Well-priced. I have recently received the wonderful paperback edition of Friedlander (480pages) www.amazon.co.uk/Friedlander-Peter-Galassi/dp/0870703447/...
Ordered in Feb 2008, received Nov 2008, price £14.85

Taschen have some wonderful photobooks at remarkably good prices,
including the excellent Brassai
www.amazon.co.uk/Brassai-Taschen-Anniversary-Special-Edit...
£5.99 for beautifully produced hardback.

And the New Horizons series has a new book on Henri Cartier-Bresson offering a good all-round biographical / critical treatment and lots of images, context etc. Just £5.21. in slightly crowded but handy format. GREAT stocking-filler.

.
Maciej Dakowicz Posted 17 years ago Edited by Maciej Dakowicz (member) 17 years ago
yes, I also got the Friedlander book, paid less than £20 for it, a good deal, the book is HUGE! but it is out of stock now for this price.

please add links to books that are in stock

edit: also Tashen's books are usually cheap and they do not gain much value in time. on the other hand the Eggleston's Guide will be worth quite much when it is sold out, the same applies to most of books published by Steidl and other relatively small publishers
China Plate Posted 17 years ago Edited by China Plate (member) 17 years ago
Two on my wish list :

www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/3865218067

The hardcover has all the contact sheets of the photos in the Americans, the cheaper softcover doesn't.

www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/386521858X

Paul Graham's Retrospective

Also just picked this up :

www.amazon.co.uk/Henri-Cartier-Bresson-Horizons-Clement-C...

sweet little book on Henri Cartier-Bresson. Lots to read, a couple of unpublished pics and a good round up on the Master. Bargain £5
China Plate Posted 17 years ago
Sorry Briggate.com, excuse my repeated info.
sweet distin Posted 17 years ago
well thanks.
you've just set me back £30 :)
Paul Russell99 Posted 17 years ago
Tony Ray-Jones for a tenner is not bad. For some reason, I bought a copy, even though I already have one.
Maciej Dakowicz Posted 17 years ago
Paul, you'll sell it in a year or two for £100. I buy two copies of books sometimes as well :)
Paul Russell99 Posted 17 years ago
Maciej - you reckon? I hope so.

The only books I have that are worth anything at all are the little early Banksy books Cut it Out, etc. that are now out of print (I discovered Banksy, obviously).
marek.wykowski Posted 17 years ago
buying books in UK is now a pure pleasure
pounds are now 1,07 to euro :-D
i usually buy at booksdepository because they do not charge me for shipping to europe

softcover Saul Leiter by Max Kozloff
, it's a bargain the original hardcover one "early color" goes for 49 euro at bookstores
www.amazon.de/Saul-Leiter-Photofile/dp/0500410976/ref=sr_...
Maciej Dakowicz Posted 17 years ago Edited by Maciej Dakowicz (member) 17 years ago
yes, getting two Saul Leiter's books from Steidl is very wise now, they were very expensive just two months ago, after the first printing was sold out. I got them both:
www.steidlville.com/books/145-Early-Color-Second-printing... - £35 (-20%)
www.steidlville.com/books/675-Saul-Leiter-Second-printing... - £22.50 (-20%)

Steidl have a promotion now 20% off and free delivery

and the softcover is very cheap now: www.amazon.co.uk/Saul-Leiter-Photofile-Max-Kozloff/dp/050...

Guys, here is a free book for you ;-) by Jindrich Streit, great and not so famous czech photographer who documented communism-era life in his village (actually the village has about 8 buildings)
during 1980 he was inprisomed, more or less because of his photography , the download should last about 5 minutes, there is an introduction in Polish, Czech and English, enjoy
www.tamtamagency.com.pl/5klatek/002extra-5klatek.pdf

@bart: thanks for that. very nice photos.

jindrich streit. Really nice work.

EDIT.
Looked through the book for about the tenth time just now.
Every single picture works on its own on every level it should.
No words needed, each a full story in itself.
very good photography indeed.
bart wrzesniowski Posted 17 years ago
Man , you should really see the place where large body of his lifetime work was made. It is really like 8 or 10 houses. A lot of photographers need to travel and change the environment to be inspired. For me he is an extreme version of Bruce Davidson who also worked mostly in his backyard.
Maciej Dakowicz Posted 17 years ago
there is a copy of Bystander for £30 on amazon.uk now, get it!

www.amazon.co.uk/Bystander-History-Photography-Colin-West...
China Plate Posted 17 years ago
Wait! I have heard rumors of a possible third edition.
Maciej Dakowicz Posted 17 years ago
don't wait! it is really hard to buy this book. get it now. and then get the third editon later as well.
China Plate Posted 17 years ago
It is the first edition, so maybe you are right Maciej.
I guess it depends on how much money and book space you have available.
Briggate.com Posted 17 years ago
Maciej, is full of festive good cheer for the rest of us.
Your round, Maciej.
Dr Karanka Posted 17 years ago
Maciej, I think you can still buy photobroker.com and make a small business!
Dr Karanka Posted 17 years ago
Btw, would a third edition of Bystander mean that it doesn't end with Winogrand?
China Plate Posted 17 years ago
The second edition doesn't finish with Winogrand so I suppose not?
Dr Karanka Posted 17 years ago
OK, the one I had read finished with an interview to Meyerowitz about Winogrand, and then some more modern images that were not discussed much if I recall correctly.
toong_bo Posted 17 years ago
Great thread, Maciej.

Make sure you sign up for Steidl's book club (no charge) because the 20% discount seems to be for book club members only. (Maciej, the prices you quoted for the Leiter books are pre-discount.)

Findo Posted 17 years ago
borders / Books etc. have 20% Art and Photography books at the moment...
Romain S. Donadio Posted 17 years ago
I knew I should have not read this thread. I've just spent a little under 100£ in books at Amazon.

Thank you all for the tips.
thechrisproject Posted 17 years ago
If you get Border's spam, they have a 40% off one item coupon, which can make buying a big expensive book a lot easier.
LoFiKen Posted 17 years ago
, that is seriously a good deal for a hard bound.

i hear ya photogrin, i did the same...

i get that from time to time... but sometimes the used prices on amazon are cheaper even after the discount from borders... still a good thing to get though.
Maciej Dakowicz Posted 17 years ago
just received my copy of "Tony Ray Jones" from Amazon. what a deal!
Paul Russell99 Posted 17 years ago
@ Maciej. It's a nice book. I've been trying to work out the exact location in Bournemouth of the shot on p. 131. But then, I'm a bit sad.

Findo - They just had a 40% off one book one in the past week, then this one is 40% of anything. Check your spam filter maybe? It's the Border's Rewards program.
sweet distin Posted 17 years ago
is there a code you can pass on for the 40% off?
Paul Russell99 Posted 17 years ago Edited by Paul Russell99 (member) 17 years ago
Maybe US only for the Borders thing...

I was hoping that Borders would send me a 50% off coupon like last December, but... nuffink.

Dr Karanka Posted 17 years ago
I got one of the 40% off borders earlier this year, but most are either 20% off or 5 pounds off an over 20 pound buy or similar. Still not bad though!
sweet distin Posted 17 years ago
Yeah, I found it but US only at the moment....I did get £8 off sally manns 'deep south' though, plus free p&p, so not too bad a deal.
sweet distin Posted 17 years ago
Really excellent service from Steidlville, the super good packaged book arrived today!
thechrisproject Posted 17 years ago
The codes are linked to your borders rewards account... so, not really anything to pass along, just wanted to give a heads up in case you regularly trash border's spam, like I do.

I did use this to get the Saudek book last year.
Maciej Dakowicz Posted 17 years ago
It appears that "Dog Days - Bogota" by Alex Soth is still available in the US from Steidl directly. It is going to be a very valuable book, I'd get two copies if they still have them.
I have it, but the dust jacket is worn out, it was supposed to be new when I bought it, shit

Sleeping by the Mississipi is a magnificent book. I bought it at the gallery of the "Jeu de Paume" in Paris the day of the vernissage of Alec Soth's exhibition "The Space Between Us" (now shown at the Winterthur's Fotomuseum in Switzerland). I was lucky enough to have my copy signed by Soth himself.

£45 for Bruce Davidson's Subway.. from WH Smith on-line.

Doesn't sound cheap?
Same item on the Alibris (UK) site = £241.47 (used)
Amazon also has a couple of used copies £362.04 and £204.55.

Paul Russell99 Posted 17 years ago Edited by Paul Russell99 (member) 17 years ago
I think I have mentioned this before, but Koenig Books at 80 Charing Cross Road (London!) often has cheap photography books, as well as general art books.

I bought The Animals, Public Relations and Figments for about half the cover price over a period of about a year. They usually have something interesting so it's worth popping in...

Bruce Davidson inspired me more than any other living and active photographer when first got seriously into photography in the early 1980s. He still inspires.

John Armstrong aka John Legweak Posted 17 years ago
I noticed Alec Soth included Masahisa Fukase's Solitude of Ravens in his PhotoEye list with the comment, "One of my favorite books of all time finally gets some good packaging."

I've been looking to get this book for a while. Do I have to worry about good vs. not good printings/editions? I'd be willing to sacrifice a little quality to avoid paying $200 but I don't want to get something and find out it's crappy.
Dr Karanka Posted 17 years ago
Yeah, John, I was wondering about that one too.
China Plate Posted 17 years ago Edited by China Plate (member) 17 years ago
There is a new edition of Solitude of Ravens which has recently been released by the Rat Hole Gallery in Japan.

www.ratholegallery.com/

They are in a limited edition of 1000.
It retails for £70 in England and I think around $200 in the US.

www.photoeye.com/bookstore/mShowDetailsbycatAmazon.cfm?Ca...

Well worth buying, beautifully printed with a slip case hence Alec's
"some good packaging" comment.

The Photographers Gallery in London have 5 or 6 of them left.
(Buying them here makes good economic sense as the American stores seem to be expensive in comparison)
John Armstrong aka John Legweak Posted 17 years ago
China Plate, thanks for the info. Wonder why the price difference is so great?
China Plate Posted 17 years ago Edited by China Plate (member) 17 years ago
John, I don't think the Photographers Gallery has hiked their price up yet. I recall seeing a $125 American price tag about a month ago but they have gone up recently.
