Interviews
Eavis works for the wall street journal? for some reason i always pictured him being a stock market type guy (but now, i guess meltdown would be a bit weird if he was).
if i ever have to interview raoul, i'm going to make sure to ask him some gear questions too.. shit was funny.
[edit] well shit, now that i think about it, every piece of photogear i own (included my scanner, excluding my flashes) was discussed with raoul prior to me purchasing them... so i guess i have interviewed him on the subject and it wasn't funny.. it was helpful.

just read in the about section that the guy's been into photography less than a year, which is quite surprising to read (maybe it's good that somebody spends more time blogging and reading and interviewing than shooting?)

it probably works both ways joni.. i'm sure doing a blog like that is going to help him in his own photography.. it's a nice site though (both in content and look/navigation).
he's a hcsp member and has posted a few times around here.
i see that jinju and kramer have some 'photos of the day' on there as well.

Yeah, that blog got a lot right really quickly, I think. Cool stuff.

yeah both.
i prefer written interviews. i miss a lot of information listening to someone i would get when reading what (s)he said. also, this q&a format you are sick of, bryan (i prefer them to be edited differently, too), is way more annoying and harder to evade when doing an interview in video/audio. i think anyway.

Eh, maybe I'm a Luddite, but: get the information across, in the most engaging way for the format you choose. That's all I really care about; I'd much rather read a well-articulated interview on a well-formatted site with a good font than watch somebody bumble through a video interview just because "hey, it's the internet, so we can." If you've got the tech to do a Magnum in Motion thing--and a subject that would fit it--great. If not, just do whatever right.

Damn. thanks for this Rafa. And thanks for the comments. Damn motivating. It's good to know I'm not just an echo chamber now :)
I'm the guy with minimal time running urbansand.
I started this after realizing my direct emails and chats with a number of you carried so much impact with me. More than any other method of learning and discovering.
And then something else hit me. These photos were having a strong impact on how I viewed the world. In a very powerful way. I hadn't had this feeling since I was a teenager and discovered music that really resonated with me. ( Joy Division ) It changed me. It also started irritating the hell out of me that there is so much noise in the world of photography that it's hard to discover great work. Would like that to change.
>BryanF.
Yeah I also wish I could do more than just Q&A. My challenge is both time and the ability to write well. The latter part is about my being new as a photographer. As I get my feet under me that will change. I just wouldn't do it justice right now. Time is also minimal. I have a technology venture funded startup and a beautiful baby and that's where my time goes :). But both get time through my lens....
As it relates to photography I'm an entrepreneur first and with that I'm only getting my feet wet right now. I'm also thinking of something much different right now that might do some good in photography. My talent has been facilitating change in media so I'll focus where I'm strong first until I get some photography chops.
> Dr Karanka
I started jumping into photography September of last year. I actually remember the moment I decided to do this. It was when one of you told me photography is often just a reflection of yourself. I rapidly dug through all my photo's after hearing this ... and damn did it hit me. The closeness, the distance, man oh man..... I think I see me... I see something I hadn't seen before. I needed this outlet.
I'm also *super* excited about insig.ht.
Ramble Ramble Ramble... see I can't write :)

I like Charlie Rose style interviews.
That's on the TVs and could easily be on the Internets.
Maybe I just want a photography TV show because I'm lazy...
EDIT: dairus, the interview comment wasn't a knock on what you're doing. they're very good.
just more of a general comment from an over consumer of photography content :)

Aside from the format, does Charlie Rose not make you just want to punch him? I'd like to see him do Eggleston though - would be cringeworthy :)

Well Charlie's gushy style sure goes over like a lead balloon but to be fair I don't think HCB is the easiest guy to interview

That's because he's an Anarchist....
Great site, Darrius. I've enjoyed it very much so far. Clean, nice and informative.

@mort: a punch in the face is way too good for Charlie Rose. If ever anyone on American public television embodied egomaniacal middlebrow insufferability pretending to be smart, it is he.
Production-value-wise, though, that black box studio is extremely easy to replicate.

From Mark Powell's interview:
"I started taking my camera most places and having adventures."
I love that. That's how it's supposed to be.

Right, I wasnt laying all the blame at Rose's door, HCB sounded like a retard, literally unable to string together more than a few thoughts to sound coherent. I think he said he was an anarchist about a thousand times in that interview. Maybe he was more eloquent in French, who knows. Anyway, boring interview, as boring as, well, HCB's photos. Maybe retard is a bit strong, he did sound like a stuck up old coot, which I have it on good authority, he was.

Hey Darrius, I am trully enjoying your interviews and all that jazz... so laid back. Congrats!
yes, great work, darrius. it´s always funny to see mr. gaddy and mr. formhals almost shoulder to shoulder on the same page :)
you try to present a broad spectrum, that´s great.

Thanks Ludmilla and Erik. Feedback is motivating. Perhaps getting diversity isn't as challenging as it could be since I'm new and thus a bit ignorant :) It actually does get a little challenging...
Bryan for me was important. I really wanted to get a perspective of someone is really active at curating and bringing visibility to others and not just showcasing their own work. And man, LPV was an important first find for me as has been many of you who I found through HCSP. Hell looking at all of you on this thread I can't help feel admiration. I can't help to feel but happy about that. Man I'm a sap.
If anyone has any recommendations for interviews and related questions send them my way and I'll take a crack at it.

Thanks Darrius.
One thing I'd like to elaborate on, and that's the idea that I'm 'curating.' I'm not. It's the HCSP/LPV ecosystem that's doing the curating. I'm just creating a platform (one of many) to showcase the efforts.
What we've created I feel is the promise of crowdsourcing. We've set up an intricate network where no single individual does all the heavy lifting. It's a group effort through faving, pools, blogs, discussions, etc. And I think Urbansand fits very nicely into that mix.
But what happens next?

Thanks Bryan. That's an important distinction. But I won't discount knowing you keep actively thinking about how to facilitate all of this forward. And you are a key facilitator.
Have you seen "The Cool School"? It's about the LA art scene before there arguably was one...as it started (1957->). It revolves around a group often called "The Ferus Gang" (Ferus Gallery). Some consider it as having a significant impact on art. The individuals involved were all really interesting characters and played their part.
The key members of HCSP remind me of the Ferus Gang. An important group that became a catalyst for change. My gut also says something in fact is "next" and this group will play a part.

Interview with Rafal Pruszynski posted at Urbansand. Thanks Rafal.
There are more interviews coming up shortly, to include those not found at Flickr, :) I hope you'll like. I got a little backlogged after getting sick.

Good Stuff Darrius. I like the lack of self-importance in your approach, it's very charming.
possibly interesting once you get past the initial art-speak:
Interviews with artists operate on the same register as the studio visit: both have become established as the methodology for critics, curators, writers and other artists to engage with practice; both are moments when artwork is entered into the realms of critical discourse

I knew very little about Josef Koudelka until I read these interview with Frank Horvat in 1987. I wish there were more photographers who weren't in it for the money. Koudelka's claim that he didn't take a paid assignment for 20 years, and instead slept outdoors in a sleeping bag following his own interests, is salutory.
