Great shots recently seen
this one by former admin John Goldsmith is something I hadn't seen when it was originally done (the admods here have a long tradition of keeping their own work off the group) but which he just put up on FB. A very nice complex composition:

Saw this posted recently on FB.
Aside from winning it simply on the degree of difficulty, given the technical limitations of the tools he was working with in 1911, Francis James (FJ) Mortimer FRPS (1874 – 1944) totally nailed the moment.

Nice. Ol' Ansel could use a camera without legs - who knew?
And then there's all that great stuff by young Kubrick-

Pretty cool Hollywood Boulevard layered photo from Aaron Berger. On one hand it looks cluttered but there's quite a lot of interesting stuff going on simultaneously.

Of course not, TC; you're having difficulty remembering that HCSP ran for quite a while before you and Vogel were made admins, got a lock on the pool, and threw out a lot of stuff. That was what, 12, 13, 14 years ago?
It's been so long it's hard to believe now, eh? Any more it looks like NOTHING gets into the pool.
Hey kids! Time to rise up and throw off your chains!
Feel free to use this thread to hijack the pool (which is stagnant anyway) by throwing in images you find that are really great!
One at a time of course, and not your own shit - duh - and on-point with the dedicated SP approach.
Let's see how long it takes for this thread to go the way of the Epstein Files!

Appreciate the kind words Harve. This is even more kind than the "Nice!" comment I got from you... Which I knew at that moment this was as good as I hoped. This is probably up there with the best "street scenes" I've ever made in my opinion, so I really appreciate it.
Pool worthy or not, I think it's a fine example of "straight" street photography, and I'm incredibly proud to have made it. A kind of photo I have been working on for awhile. It has the organization AND that "je nais se quois", which feels so rare for me to have come together; making photos that read well feels pretty easy these days, but finding something worth photographing is not.
Cheers!
Thank you sir. Much love, always.
I agree that Kyle has a lot of great shots in his impressive photo stream.
I've seen better, I've seen worse. I think it is a bit of a dick move using Kyle's half way decent photo as a pretense to launch your one man coup. But that seems to be where we are at.
I don't think I ever would have gotten terribly excited by that particular shot (Kyle, who has many very nice shots in his stream, didn't expressly ask for critique), but yeah, everyone has different tastes and styles.
What _is_ impressive to me is Harvey's dedication to a group that he feels went down the drain nearly 15 years ago and never recovered; all this time, which he could have spent fostering his own group of truly great street photography, he has unselfishly dedicated to these unhallowed halls. Now that's loyalty.

The old guard couldn't stand you Harvey, they ridiculed you constantly.
There is a long standing unwritten rule that we don't post other member's photos without prior consent here. Have knows that as he has been here for a very very long time. He used your photo to grind an axe. It isn't a terrible offense, if it was we would have deleted it. It is, like I said, a dick move because he knows better.
Kyle, sorry to get you involved in a foofaraw. My intent really was just to bring eyes to an outstanding shot, but I was irked by the dismissal.
As to the 'long standing unwritten rule', as a work colleague of mine once said to me, speaking of the admins at that place, 'if they want to beat you, they're gonna find a stick somewhere'. It's funny it wasn't an issue with the post I started the thread with.
I'm happy to let folks decide for themselves where the 'dick move' lies.

You really want to play this game, Harve?
" It's funny it wasn't an issue with the post I started the thread with."
The photo you started the thread with was by John Goldsmith, a former Admin in which you recognize that admins don't post in the pool under the heading "Great shots recently seen".
You followed that by a photo from 1911, presumably the author is long gone from this mortal coil. None of which runs afoul of the rules that again, you are well aware of. This post is different. It is in the "this should be in the pool" vein. Again, you know that is frowned upon. It forces the admins, should they take the bait, of either defend the pool or negatively critique the photo.
"My intent really was just to bring eyes to an outstanding shot, but I was irked by the dismissal."
You can pretend that was your intent but you and I both know better, right?

This speaks far more to your intent than anything. All due respect Harve, go fuck yourself.

Yup - I said that. But it only occurred to me after TC dismissed the shot. Dick move.
Not liking every shot you like is a weird definition of a dick move, I gotta say.
I said, as everyone can see above:
“Not seeing the shoe-in part myself tbh”
“Not seeing the shoe-in part myself tbh”
and the gatekeepers word is the last word.
Never mind that there were years of admins before you got elevated - I stand by what I said: "Time was....this would have been a shoo-in for the pool."
The thing that you and Vogel are dancing around is that, even as this place is lying dead in the water, and neither of you is doing anything to keep it going, you can't stand giving up an inch of control - 'they'll have to pry that star out of my cold stiff fingers!'
oh, and TC, it's shoo-in. shoe-in makes no sense whatsoever.

Considering the etymology of that particular piece of slang, i.e. "The phrase 'shoo-in' originated in the late 19th century, likely from horse racing. When a horse was allowed to win easily, it was said to have been 'shooed in' imply it was gently guided or 'shooed' across the finish line", it might be more relevant than I thought. But I admit that I got it wrong; the origins in rigged horse races made for an easy jump to the word "shoe" in my mind (Also, it should be "gatekeeper's word").
Pedantry aside, I'll continue to keep my own opinions about photos, thanks.

Feel free. at least until you don't; you know the drill.
Long tome no see, Smithy.

JUSTIN vogel Hey yourself.. hangin about right I reckon. See some things never hang any differently though.
Oh I’ve also been hanging around Reddit street photography subs. They make my eyes bleed.
I haven't been here for a while, though I read.
1. Kyle consistently gets me on the edge of my seat. That's one kind of street photography.
2. Bouwe for instance, the freedom of his lens, the zen quality of his pictures that seem to call no attention to themselves or how they come together and don't seem to imitate anyone is another that gets me looking.
3. Harvey's quattrocento geometries but for me, the post modern authenticity of his environs in the south.
I could go on and on. I love the work Justin is doing on instagram which is an honest and raw eye, I actually think it's freed him in a lot of ways.
Anyway, the point is, I haven't "understood" the pool for a while. There's almost no quiet or silence or subtlety to the choices to the pool at all. I'm sure there are exceptions, but they're not the rule. I feel like Barry Talis's (sorry if I misspelled it) flash aesthetic kind of took over a few years ago and it hasn't evolved at all. There is way too much blasting flash for me in the pool. It's dramatic and often empty. And wild gestures, and clear spacing. I'm giving my opinion since it came up, because it's one of the reasons I don't look at the pool so much. I wouldn't want it to go back to 5-7 years ago, but I'm hoping it evolves, becaus it feels like its been stuck in the same place for a while.
My opinion only. Love to you all!
By the way, I don't mind flash, but how much do I have to see of close up faces staring wild eyed, or rain or whatever lit up by flash?
Also by the way, I don't think of myself as a good street photographer at all or actually ever having shot anything deserving of being in the pool, genuinely. I use what I learned here and other places, the values of street photography I learned here in all my work and it is a huge influence with a dedication to the authentic moment and quite often natural light. Also my love of the 3:2 aspect ratio above all (that's a bit of a prison.)

Justin's showing work on IG? Weird - he hasn't posted anything here on Flickr in nearly 2 years.
