The puzzle-plate boat of the Tao people who live in Lanyu (the Orchid Island), Taiwan, are the accumulation of the wisdom of the ancestors. Every year after the Flying Fish Ritual, praying for good luck before catching flying fish, the Tao start to build the boats. First, the owners of the boats would cut doum some lumber in the mountains, and make up the main body by 21-27 different pieces of planks. Then, join them by kapok or resin and connect them by wooden pegs in order to fasten the planks. The boat are painted in red, black, and white to emphasize the cultural features and the aesthetic talent. Moreover, the detailed carving and patterns such as the eyes and the human figures that symbolize heros have the power of exorcising the evil spirits. As a result, instead of a shipwerck, the boats will sail safely.
